Summative comments

James, you were able to carry out relevant research, using a consistently informed approach into the roles both ‘on the text’ and ‘off the text’. Your use of secondary sources was effective and supported by effective analysis that informed your interpretation.

You were able to demonstrate your understanding of both the artistic and intellectual decisions about the roles, fully supported by a reasoned argument based on evidence from the text, your performer’s intuition and other sources. You were able to communicate your understanding using the appropriate language and terminology confidently and accurately.

You were confident in using your skills and quite independent in the way that you were able to find the right gesture, tone of voice, dance move, rhythm and pitch of a note and apply them to the context of the work at hand. Any questions asked were confidently delivered, often included constructive ideas and strong responses to directorial ideas.

You had a professional attitude to rehearsals and were fully focused on the task of interpreting and engaging with the Rent material. You contributed ideas that made a significant impact on the content and possibilities of a scene, song or musical number. You often helped to energise the creative process and make many insightful suggestions that help to move the work on. Attendance & punctuality were a strength, you arrived at rehearsals fully prepared.

You developed a sense of real confidence in everything you did on stage, with the ability to communicate your roles with a complete sense of ease and commitment. Your grasp of technique was such that they you were able to demonstrate inventiveness, dexterity and complete concentration.

James, you were a strong contributor throughout, advising and supporting others and achieving a highly effective performance. You need to ensure you are maintaining an analytical approach to your blog throughout to support you characterisation and generous, creative approach to group work.

Well done James a strong first Musical Theatre performance at the Sealight, please support future performance work with written work of an equal quality.

D1 James, you were able to demonstrate a strong command of your performance skills with control, suggesting the required physical, movement and vocal skills. You performed with a high degree of accuracy, confidence and ease, resulting in a seamless and fluent performance, essentially an embodiment of the role within Rent.

D2 Your work was the result of carefully considered, thoughtful approach to rehearsal work demonstrating a skilled and imaginative performance. You clearly showed the ability to adapt and adjust to meet demands as they arose and invested the performance with the freshness and belief as if the role required.

D3 Your focus and engagement in communicating the meaning and intention of character and the work itself was consistent throughout. You invested your performance with fresh and exciting elements, showing a marked and natural proficiency in applying performance skills.

D4 You showed a comprehensive grasp of performance conventions and etiquette and exercise considerable self-discipline throughout. They may actively arrange and coordinate warm-ups and preparation; effectively respond to, and perhaps anticipate, instructions from directors and stage-management; efficiently and unobtrusively observe health and safety, perhaps taking the lead in guiding others; effectively manage their own personal backstage space, equipment, props and costume; show sensitivity to the working demands and needs of others in the company, etc

You made an outstanding contribution to the rehearsal process, the level of skill applied to your role in terms of your own movement and vocal performances was highly effective and produced a very high standard of performance work. I feel that at every step you pushed yourself harder, working to develop and refine the piece in a highly successful way – well done James
