SCHP Context-
  • Antigone- 441 B.C. Originally performed around that time
  • Annual festival of Dyonisus, had up to a year to prepare!
  • One performance only
  • Was a competition so lots of personal pride at stake, if a play was not popular the play write may not be asked to compete the following year
  • No women
  • Part of a series, the stories linked and followed on from each other based on myths e.g. Antigone is a trilogy.
  • Use of chorus represent the common people or conduit for audience.
  • Masks to protect the actor, as it let them be a villain or commit a blasphemous or murderous act in character to prevent social backlash. Was also used to get the actor 'in character' as the mask represented the character. It was an important religious and cultural devise.
Narrative/Plot-

Original Staging Conditions-
  • Acting Style- Big, projected, melodramatic, big gestures
